I led impact production in conjunction with The Reel Foundation for the refugee-focused feature The Strangers’ Case starring Omar Sy and Yasmine Al Massri. Our team coordinated the participation of 12 German and international NGOs in support of the film’s Special Gala premiere at the 74th Berlinale and red carpet activism and photo stunt in support of refugee rights at a crucial moment when anti-refugee sentiment and political action is rising in Germany and across the world. We also worked behind-the-scenes to involve Berlinale staff to secure their participation and support for the film’s message including wearing pins and t-shirts in protest of the festivals anti-refugee actions.
The team prepared communication materials and worked with the actors to refine their messages for press appearances so their key points were not lost, which was crucial given the atmosphere towards refugees and the War on Gaza. The film won the Amnesty International Film Award at the festival.
The team arranged an unprecedented Q&A at a 1200 person screening on the final night of the Berlinale giving director Brandt Andersen an opportunity to answer difficult questions about the filmmaking process and representation and show solidarity with the refugee and activist community.
We worked with press contacts to secure in-depth coverage of the film and director in support of sale and distribution of the film and funding for future projects.
